Interview with Abhishek Atul- By Nainika Gautam

Abhishek Gupta, known by his pen name “Abhishek Atul” is a writer and poet. He has been part of various anthologies like “Moonlit Matinee” and “Crumpled Voices”. His short stories “Rasgulla” and “The Curious Case of Missing Brahmins” have received critical acclaim and lot of love from readers. His work spans across Genres with focus on various social issues. His writing is a mix of satire, humor and serious thought on social issues. His story on the current state of education system was appreciated by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for the unique treatment of this subject.

He has keen interest in theatre, has written some plays that were staged during his academic and professional life. His plays “Omvati Ka Swayamwar”, “Chanakya ki Khoj” and “Bhagat Singh Bhrashtachariyon Ke Changul Mein” were well received by audience in his college and office. He plans to publish some of these plays in the form of stories.

A Software Consultant by profession, a writer by passion, he also has keen interest in travelling and photography.

Nainika: Hi Abhishek, first of all congratulations for another feather in your cap “It's all about dogs and bitches”. Coming to my first question:

We would be interested to know that how from software background, your interest diverted towards literature?

Abhishek: I wouldn’t call it a diversion. I became a writer first and a Software Consultant later.

During my college days, I used to write stories, poems and plays. Software came into my life much after literature had made a foray in my heart.

Nainika: What do you enjoy being most, “Software Consultant” or “Writer”?

Abhishek: To be honest, one complements the other. My story Rasgulla wouldn’t have been written with Chicago as the background if I hadn’t explored and loved the city. It was my job as Software Consultant that took me to Chicago and it was the writer in me that knitted a story around the city. In my play on corruption there are some dialogues between Yamraj and Yamdoot which are inspired from the life of a Software Engineer.

Nainika: Since you love writing on social issues, how did you incorporate your love for theme in your story in “It's all about dogs and bitches”

Abhishek: Our good old Bollywood movies always used to have a message that the viewers can take home at the end of the movie. It has been my endeavor to give a message to the readers in addition to their mandatory dose of entertainment. This story conveys message about love, relationships, family and other very important things in life. I have tried to raise various issues in this story that we face in our day to day life.

Nainika: Tell us something about your story, “The Midas Touch” in “It's all about dogs and bitches”.

Abhishek: It is the story of a couple who always fights but never thinks about separation. They have their set of problems but they are deep in love and can’t imagine life without each other. Their skirmishes create humorous situations that sometimes take serious turns. They have cultural clashes, ego clashes and face some really tricky situations but their love for each other makes them sail through all the storms that they encounter.

Nainika: Please throw some light on the lead characters.

Abhishek: Ankit is a Punjabi boy from Delhi, a perfect gentleman who cares about his friends and family. Sakshi is a Marwari girl from Jaipur who is free spirited, confident and ambitious. She has a heart of gold but is short tempered. They are different from each other but complement each other in strange ways.

Nainika: How close your story to real life?

Abhishek: This story is very close to real life. It has been my endeavor to write stories that readers can relate to. We can find numerous similar stories if we observe people closely. However, this story is unique in many aspects that one would notice if he reads it carefully.

Nainika: If I talk about your other creations, what extra does “The Midas Touch” has to offer to its readers?

Abhishek: “The Midas Touch” is different from everything else that I have written till now. For the first time I have tried to explore the complexities of a relationship. It was a challenge to combine love, friendship, relationship issues, humor, and social issues, all in one short story which spans over a lifetime.

Nainika: From where did you draw inspiration for the story?

Abhishek: If we look around, we will find a lot of couples who have a similar story. This story is based on my observation of such couples.

Nainika: Out of your published works, which one is your favorite?

Abhishek: It would be like asking which of your kids do you love the most. Each of my stories is completely different from each other and it would be unfair to judge them with the same yardstick.

Nainika: Why should we, the readers, buy "It's all about dogs and bitches"?

Abhishek: This book has some very interesting and entertaining stories that are bound to touch the readers’ hearts.

Nainika: What would be your message for readers?

Abhishek: The train of life needs two rails to run. Husband and wife are the two rails that ensure that this train runs smoothly. If they chose to drift apart, the train will get derailed.

Please tell us something about yourself.

Kumar: Thanks Nainika for the compliment. Now to answer to your first question. Well I'm a postgraduate in English Literature from Meerut University. I'm a state government officer by profession and a writer by heart.

Nainika: You have been a part of so many anthologies and theme was never the one we have for “It’s all about dogs and bitches”, so how was your experience writing completely different genre.

Kumar: Yes the title of the anthology was very intriguing, I had no idea what to write. I didn't want to miss another book from Gargi so I decided to give a try and 'The Formidable Foe,' came into existence. It was really very challenging to write, 'The Formidable Foe,' I had little hope that the editor will select my story but thankfully they selected it.

Nainika: Out of your so many creations, which one is your favorite and why?

Kumar: I think a writer usually likes all his creations but some of his creations always remain close to his heart. 'The Bride,' which I wrote for MM3 is one of my creations which have always been close to my heart.

Nainika: While we have a great pool of anthologies in market, what "Its all about dogs and bitches" is capable to offer different from them?

Kumar: 'It's All About Dogs And Bitches,' is quite different from a number of lovey dovey anthologies, which have flooded the anthology market. People who are bored of reading those lovey dovey tales shall certainly find 'It All About Dogs And Bitches,' interesting. There are ten tales which shall certainly entertain their readers.

Nainika: Which phase of writing do you enjoy most?

Kumar: Difficult question, anyway I love laying the plot of my stories. I drive at least 120 km everyday and that the time when I lay the plots of my stories. It helps me to use the travelling time fruitfully.

Nainika: Please throw some light on your story, "The Formidable Foe"

Kumar: 'The Formidable Foe,' is a tale of a race against the time to save a long forgotten love, but there is a big surprise in store for the protagonist.

Nainika: Tell us something about the lead characters.

Kumar: There are three leading characters, Devika, Sidharth and Julfi. Devika and Sid are long parted lovers while Julfi is a crook who is after Devika.to make her pay her father's debt.

Nainika: How close is your story to real life?

Kumar: This is tale of love and deceit. People get cheated of their fortune, their lives and even of their sentiments, so this story is the mirror of the society we live in.

Nainika: Which part of your story is your favorite?

Kumar: Well before parting Sid goes to Devika to seek her pardon for the crime he did never commit. She forgives him but refuses to get him back in her life again. I like this part of the story very much, which teaches us that one should never refrain from asking forgiveness from one's love to keep their relationship alive.

Nainika: Which character of your story resembles you someway?

Kumar: I think Sid resembles to me because all alike me he also prefers to be get cheated instead of cheating someone.

Nainika: Why should we, the readers, buy "It's all about dogs and bitches"?

Kumar: This book is a unique collection of most intriguing stories on the theme by some very good writers. This is not a collection of lovey dovey tales , quality readers should not miss this book.

Nainika: What would be your message for readers?

Kumar: Friends good books rarely hit the market, this one is really an interesting one. Please grab your copies to read another hit from some good writers and the best publisher.

Nainika: Define “Akshata” in one word.

Akshata: I would say ‘Frank’

Nainika: Akshata you come from a field entirely different from writing, how do you manage between both.

Akshata: Actually, not much of my efforts are required to manage between writing & my present career. I don’t reserve special time for me to write. It just comes from within. So whenever I feel like, I pen down.

Nainika: We know your professional goals, what goals do you have as a writer?

Akshata: For me as a writer I always aim to keep my readers glued & to give them a diverse reading. As a reader, I myself wouldn’t like monotony. So, I’d like to be versatile.

Nainika: Kindly tell us something about your story, “My fair lady” in “It’s all about dogs and bitches”.

Akshata: ‘My Fair Lady’ revolves around a young girl who is in search for her soulmate & her stance when she finds that her so-called soulmate is a complete package of crap.

Nainika: Would you like to say something about the lead characters.

Akshata: The protagonist ‘Ankita’ is a girl who has never been in love despite being an extrovert & having so many handsome guys around. She is bold and straight-forward and doesn’t care what others would think about her. She carries herself with grace and poise.

Nainika: Which character of your story is your favorite?

Akshata: If I’m asked to name only one, it has to be Saket. I have picked this character from my real life. He’s my best friend and just like in the story he’s a support to me in real life as well.

Nainika: Which part of your story touched you closely?

Akshata: The part where ‘how my would-be wife should be’ is being described by the guy. Although we speak of progressive mindset, gender equality, rationalism and what not, when it comes to marriage I don’t know under which rock these thoughts go. I agree that people are changing and so is the thought process, but it still exists at some places.

Nainika: While there are so many anthologies coming up, what made you participate in “Its all about dogs and bitches”?

Akshata: Well, the title caught my eye. When I went through the guidelines, I had a story that would aptly fit into the criteria. So I thought why not give it a try? I was overjoyed to read my name in the selected author’s list because this is my first step into being published.

Nainika: Which lines of the story are your favorite?

Akshata: ‘What if a girl has a dusky complexion, an outstanding career and is ambitious and smart? Isn’t she good? To top it all he just said, a graduate would also do? Do? Do what?’ when you read the full context, it would get on a girl’s nerve because she picks up a course of her choice for herself & not because she would get a filthy rich husband. 

Nainika: Why should we, the readers, buy "It's all about dogs and bitches"?

Akshata: ‘It’s all about dogs and bitches’ is going to be a collection of some really heart-touching hate stories. It would be a caution about the possible threats that might be a step away for the ones in relationships & for the ones who want to be in a relationship. 

Nainika: What would be your message for readers?

Akshata: Being in love & being loved is one of the best feelings. But being hurt is also a part of life. It teaches you lot of things, so learn without losing hope that it is not the end. These stories would definitely give you the hope I’m sure of it.

Dr. Nayab Patel is a UK based author currently working as a Lecturer for Milton Keynes College. She has completed DTTLS from University of Warwick and her Ph. D from University of Mumbai. Nayab has held various posts during her career of 14 years including Sub-Editor, Curriculum Planner, Examiner/ moderator at the University of Mumbai and Lecturer at various colleges in Mumbai.

Please tell us something more about yourself.

Nayab: I have lived in Mumbai all my life, I have been teaching for the past 14 years. I completed my Ph.D in English Literature from the University of Mumbai and worked as a Lecturer and Visiting Lecturer. I taught final year Journalism and Advertising students. In 2010 I relocated to the UK after marriage and since then I have continued my passion for teaching and learning. I have completed my DTLLS from the University of Warwick and am a lecturer at Milton Keynes College. Writing had always been my passion but I never thought of getting my stories published until my friend and husband motivated me to. I got my first publication here in the UK and after that have been part of many anthologies. I have a son and like spending time with him. 

Nainika: Having so much love for writing, which genre do you enjoy most while penning down?

Nayab: I enjoy writing tragedies. I just feel that it comes very naturally to me.

Nainika: Amongst all your works(previous and upcoming), which one is your favorite

Nayab: My forthcoming publication in Mother Nature "Thorns"

Nainika: What would you like to say about your story, “Betrayal” in “It’s all about dogs and bitches”?

Nayab: It is a story of one sided love and sacrifice. It revolves around the protagonist who gives in so much and gets nothing in return that she finally decides to call it quits!

Nainika: What is the most striking feature of your story?

Nayab: It is a true story and the readers will relate and connect to it immediately.

Nainika: Tell us something about the lead characters of your story.

Nayab: Bilal is an arrogant, over smart, rich and stupid boy, whereas Afsheen is sensible, down-to-earth and loving girl. They are both are opposite to each other and for once I have proved it that "Opposites only attract that’s it!"

Nainika: Considering your previous works, what extra does this story has to offer to readers?

Nayab: It is a unique story in itself and the readers will definitely enjoy reading it.

Nainika: Rate your story on the scale of 10.

Nayab: 8.5

Nainika: How closely are the characters of your story related to real life?

Nayab: The characters represent today's youth and very real when they converse with each other.

Nikita Nepali, a girl with countless dreams lives in a Diamond city Surat, Gujarat. She is blessed with adorable parents and precious friends. She is an IT student. She has completed her bachelor’s. And these days, she is pursuing her master’s degree in IT. Apart from studies, writing is her passion and romance is her favorite genre. She had started writing when she was just a school going girl. After being a part of so many books by Gargi Publishers, how would you rate Gargi Publishers on scale of 10.

Nikita: Definitely 10 out of 10. Gargi Publishers is a great from a writer, especial the beginners. 

Nainika: You love writing romance, then what made you write for “Its all about dogs and bitches” which is not closely related to your favorite genre”?

Nikita: Yes, I love writing romantic stories but as it is said that every coin has two sides. Love, Romance too have a different side and “Its all about dogs and bitches” gave me the opportunity to write for a different and dark side of Romance. 

Nainika: Amongst all your works(previous and upcoming), which one is your favorite.

Nikita: Hmm. My favorite one hasn’t published yet. But from previous works, “Love Inspires” in Moonlit Matinee 4, The Notebook of Romance, is my favorite. 

Nainika: What would you like to say about your story, “I love you, both” in “Its all about dogs and bitches”

Nikita: A story, “I love you, both” is about a girl, Nitika. Who got stuck in a wrong relationship. The story is all about her thoughts and decisions, whether she came out of it or chose to stay, settled down and made bad compromises. A story also shows the bond between two female friends. How a friend also stands beside her friend! 

Nainika: Considering your previous works, what extra does this story has to offer to readers?

Nikita: I had worked on Love stories. I always make people to take inspiration from Love. But through this story, I will make them take lessons from Love. I don’t want to say more, but to get the difference between my previous works and this story, readers really should read this story.

Nainika: Please throw some light on the lead characters of the story.

Nikita: There are mainly three characters in the story, Meera, Nitika aka Niti and Johaan. The story is all about Nitika’s relationship with Johaan. Meera is Nitika’s best friend who always heard her. Niti used to share almost everything with her. Apart from Love, how a friendship can tie two people forever is also interesting in the story, after all Love becomes less-interesting if you don’t have a best friend to share your relationship secrets. 

Nainika: Can I, as reader be inspired positively from any of the characters in your story.

Nikita: Definitely yes. You will be inspired positively from all three characters in the story. You will miss your best friend with whom you used to share your heart breaks and happiness as well. You will miss your Ex for a moment who has taught you lessons for life and unknowingly made you stronger. You will eventually start thinking about your would-be or future partner. You would be clear what to do and what not to do. 

Nainika: Give three words for your story, that highlights its features.

Nikita: Love happens with one.

Nainika: How can your story bring a change in world?

Nikita: People used to fall in love every single day. That is not a problem actually, but it creates problems when you start falling in love with different person each day. Love is a feeling that comes for a one person for a life. I hope my story will help the world to understand that.

Nainika: Why should we, the readers, buy "It's all about dogs and bitches"?

Nikita:The readers should buy “Its all about dogs and bitches” because it is a really different and interesting theme. You will enjoy reading it and learn from it at a same time. The stories will save you from all dogs and bitches out there. Eventually it will make you stronger. 

Nainika: What would be your message for readers?

Nikita:Readers, you must have read different different anthologies until now. But here it is something more interesting. ”Its all about dogs and bitches” is a collection of experiences. I am sure we all have gone through bad situations and survived them. Now it’s time to enjoy those experiences and celebrate our survival. Those lucky ones who haven’t gone through it yet, be aware of these dogs and bitches. Watch out. And last but not the least, Keep reading, readers. Nainika: Hi Geetika, first of all congratulations for another feather in your cap “It's all about dogs and bitches”. Coming to my first question:

Geetika, loving your students so dearly, how do you think can your writing be helpful for them? 

Geetika: Well, I haven’t written anything of the sort that would help them. But yes, if they read what I write, they definitely know me more than I think they do. Moreover, I write things that are quite generic, so it would be lovely to hear if they relate to what I write. My students are in their late teens and this is the time when one has lot of lost of friendships, broken hearts and need someone who can fathom their situation and understand the tsunami of emotions going inside them. And that is where I come in. Knowing me and my writing helps them connect with me. Few students do approach for their personal matters. I think it is all about making connections and having the confidence in the other person. 

Nainika: What role does your profession plays in your hobby of writing?

Geetika: My profession helps me understand the dynamics of how things work with students and that helps me put it in my writing. It kind of rejuvenates me and takes me back in the time when I was a student. And how I used to look at things then, and how have they changed, how I have evolved over a period of time and it only makes you more philosophical. As they say, being a writer you don’t have to judge, you just have to understand. Getting paranoid over a zillion things, which don’t even matter after a certain time, I think that is how things work around, specially at that age. So yeah, my profession is a great inspiration for me to write countless stories.

Nainika: Being a teacher, or being a writer, what is that you enjoy most and why? 

Geetika: Both. Teaching my students, meeting them regularly, sharing a joke or two in the class to make the subject interesting, seeing them smile and the contentment I get after every class, is immense. That feeling can never be compared. Ever. And this helps me keep my sanity alive. Writing helps me discover myself, my emotions, my take on various aspects and how things function in the society. It helps me voice my opinions and allows them to be heard and valued. At least that is what I think it does. And a word of appreciation or two is always does the needful.

Nainika: Tell us something about your story, “What goes around, comes around” in “It's all about dogs and bitches”.

Geetika: It’s a story about two friends, Gia and Aarav. How relationship work these days in college, this story gives a sneak peek into the lives of these mature students. How people change and how fragile relationships are, how everything goes around the word called trust. One has to be really careful while investing in their relationships and that what this story tells. 

Nainika: Which one word describes your story best? 

Geetika: Intriguing.

Nainika: Tell us something about the lead characters.

Geetika: The lead characters are Gia and Aarav. Gia is a popular girl in her college because of the thorough knowledge. She is a helpful soul with a kind heart. Aarav is a nice guy, who wants to have fun and make the most at the same time. He knows how to make way for himself and get things done without letting anyone know what game he is playing. When they both meet, they discover a lot more things about each other than they ever thought they would know and that is where it gets interesting. 

Nainika: Which out of these is your favorite?

Geetika: Of course, Gia!


Nainika: How do you see success of this book?

Geetika: This book contains excellent stories, each revolving around the relationships, revealing its various faces. All these brilliant writers have come together to pen for this book. I think this book will do pretty good in the market.

Nainika: How close is your story to real life?

Geetika: Well the characters are pretty close to me in the real life, but the story is a fiction. There are a few aspects that are picked from real life, but major part of the story is fiction only.

Nainika: Why should we, the readers, buy "It's all about dogs and bitches"?

Geetika: Well, “It’s all about dogs and bitches”, show how the definition of love has changed over a period of time. Gone are the days, when girls used to be the scapegoats of everything. Today, the same happens with boys as well. It contains stories that I think every reader could connect with at some point or the other. Also, if you’re fond of reading about relationships, this is just for you. For every story is different and shows a different purview of relationships altogether.

Nainika: What would be your message for readers?

Geetika: My message would be to always have faith in you. Never go down for someone else in your life and lose your value. You are much more worth than you think you are. Fall in love, explore it around, feel the happiness and be cautious at the same time. Never allow anyone to play with your feelings.
